Overview
Sculptural vintage art glass object from the Kasvimaalla (Finnish for “In the Garden”) series, designed by Pertti Santalahti in the 1980s and produced at Humppila Glassworks, Finland.
The piece functions as a candle holder and as an independent sculptural accent.
The form develops vertically from a heavy, irregular base into a clear, textured glass body, echoing natural Nordic motifs: ice, stone, plant growth and flowing water.
Design & Material
Handmade clear art glass with an organically shaped structure. The surface shows deliberate irregularities created during free form hot glass shaping.
The lower part transitions into a dense, dark-toned glass base with dark berry / raspberry hues visible under light. Rather rare color in that series.
The underside shows technical glassworking marks typical of hand formed studio glass, consistent with traditional production methods and not considered damage.
Context
Santalahti’s work belongs to a Nordic art glass tradition that peaked in the second half of the 20th century, emphasizing natural forms and material expression over symmetry. Works by the designer are held in museum collections, including the Finnish Glass Museum.
