Fitting and handling
Green oak is supplied with a high moisture content and will shrink and shake as it dries in situ - this is normal and does not affect structural integrity. Allow for this movement when detailing joints and fixing positions; traditional mortice and tenon or drawbored joints accommodate drying movement far better than rigid bolted connections alone. Store beams horizontally on level bearers, off the ground and under cover, with spacers between each length to allow air circulation until you are ready to install.
FAQ
What is the difference between green oak and seasoned oak?
Green oak is cut and supplied at its natural moisture content, typically above 30%. Seasoned or dried oak has been allowed to lose moisture over time, either in a kiln or by air drying. Green oak is easier to work with hand and machine tools, but it will move and develop surface shakes as it dries after installation.
Will green oak beams crack after fitting?
Surface shaking is expected and is a natural characteristic of drying green oak. Shakes are surface-level splits that follow the grain and do not indicate structural failure. They are widely accepted in traditional timber framing and add to the character of an exposed beam.
Can green oak beams be used externally in the UK?
Yes. Oak has naturally high tannin content which gives it good durability outdoors without preservative treatment. It is commonly used for pergolas, porches and outbuildings across the UK. For ground contact or prolonged water pooling, additional detailing to drain water away from end grain is recommended.
