What it's used for
- Joinery components including window boards, sills and frames where durability is required
- Furniture and cabinetmaking where a hardwearing, stable board is needed
- Exterior cladding or garden structures benefiting from Iroko's natural resistance to decay
- Worktops, shelving and fitted interiors where a close-grained, attractive hardwood is specified
Fitting and handling
Allow the boards to acclimatise in the installation environment for at least five to seven days before fixing, particularly for interior joinery work where central heating cycles can cause movement. When machining, a reduced cutting angle of around 15 degrees is advised to minimise tear-out on the interlocked grain and to limit tool dulling. For exterior applications, a penetrating oil finish or appropriate hardwood preservative should be applied to all surfaces, including cut ends, before fitting.
FAQ
Is Iroko a good substitute for Teak?
Yes, Iroko shares many of Teak's practical properties, including good natural durability and resistance to decay, at a considerably lower cost. It is widely used as a Teak alternative in joinery, furniture and exterior applications across the UK.
Does Iroko need treating before use outdoors?
Although Iroko has good natural durability and is classed as moderately durable to durable by European standards, applying a quality hardwood oil or exterior finish will extend its service life and maintain its appearance when used outside.
What does FAS grade mean for hardwood timber?
FAS stands for Firsts and Seconds, the highest standard grade in the hardwood grading system used across the UK and governed by NHLA rules. FAS boards are longer, wider and carry fewer defects than lower grades, making them well suited to joinery and furniture work.
Nottage Timber Merchants supply FAS Iroko and a wide range of other hardwoods to trade and retail customers across South Wales, with next-day delivery available to the Bridgend area.
